Jane May of IFMK Law has prepared a memo regarding the recently signed Illinois Worker Freedom of Speech Law. The new law prohibits Illinois employers from requiring employees to attend employer-mandated meetings regarding political or religious matters.

The law is set to take effect on January 1, 2025, but a legal challenge has already been filed in federal court asserting that it violates employers’ free speech rights. In the event that a court does not block the law before its effective date, please ensure that supervisory staff are aware of the prohibitions in the law to avoid incurring liability.

The link below will download the full, detailed memo that provides further information. If you have any questions or need assistance, please do not hesitate to contact your risk management consultant.
